On Thursday, the UN Security Council unanimously decided to prolong a long-running peacekeeping mission in Lebanon “for a final time” until the end of 2026. After that, the operation will start a year-long “orderly and safe drawdown and withdrawal.
Established in 1978, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) guards Lebanon’s southern border with Israel. A deal with the United States, a council member with a veto, allowed the 15-member council to unanimously endorse a resolution authored in French. It was resolved by the Security Council “to extend for a final time the mandate of UNIFIL.
The resolution calls for UNIFIL to end its operations on 31 December 2026 and begin, within the following year, a safe and orderly drawdown and withdrawal of its personnel. This process is to be carried out in close coordination with the Lebanese government, with the goal of ensuring that Lebanon assumes sole responsibility for security in the south. Acting U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Dorothy Shea stated that this will be the final time the United States supports an extension of UNIFIL’s mandate.
