After weeks of youth-led protests on the Indian Ocean island, an elite military squad claims to have overthrown President Andry Rajoelina in Madagascar. Col. Michael Randrianirina, the head of CAPSAT, stated outside the Presidential Palace that elections and a government would be formed by the military in two years. Additionally, he suspended the electoral commission and other important democratic institutions.
Since “the movement was created in the streets so we have to respect their demands,” he continued, Gen Z demonstrators will be included in the adjustments. In Antananarivo, the capital, thousands of protesters and troops have been cheering and waving flags in celebration of President Rajoelina’s apparent overthrow.
Despite a statement from the president’s office claiming he was still in power and condemning what it called a “attempted coup d’etat,” Madagascar’s constitutional court has named Col. Randrianirina as the country’s new leader.
Although Rajoelina’s location is unclear, he has stated that he is taking refuge in a “safe place” after a purported attempt on his life by “military personnel and politicians,” which CAPSAT has denied any role in. Unverified rumors have circulated that the president was transported abroad aboard a French military plane.
