At least 21 workers were killed in an explosion at a firecracker plant on Dhunwa Road in Deesa, Gujarat’s Banaskantha district. The death toll may grow further as rescue operations continue. The explosion sparked a big fire, causing mayhem in the region as rescue crews fought to extinguish the flames and extract survivors from the debris.

In response to the incident, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urged for stricter implementation of safety norms in fireworks manufacturing. In a social media message, he offered his condolences to the impacted families and called for a thorough inquiry to bring those responsible accountable.

Such incidents happen frequently in these factories, and underprivileged workers die while working. “To avoid such tragedies, safety rules must be strictly enforced and clear accountability established,” he wrote on X.

Earlier, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed great grief over the occurrence and promised full support to the victims’ families. He described the tragedy as “heart-wrenching,” noting the collapse of the building’s slab caused by the explosion, which resulted in the loss of workers’ lives.

In a statement, CM Patel stated, “The incident in which workers died as a result of an explosion and fire at a firecracker godown in Deesa is extremely tragic.” My sincere condolences to the departed family during this terrible period. I constantly communicate with the administration on rescue, relief, and medical treatment activities. Instructions were given to guarantee that the injured received fast and proper medical care.
