After a 15-year break, high-level diplomatic discussions between the interim governments of Bangladesh and Pakistan were resumed by foreign ministry officials in an effort to improve tense ties between the two countries.

Bangladesh improved ties with neighbouring India in all areas under previous prime leader Sheikh Hasina, who was overthrown in August by a student-led popular rebellion. However, relations with India have grown more strained. Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, the acting leader of Bangladesh, has slammed India for keeping Hasina in the nation and has asked for her extradition without receiving a response.

In the meanwhile, Yunus has worked to strengthen ties with Pakistan. He has had many meetings with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in recent months, and in January, a high-level Bangladeshi military team paid a rare visit to Pakistan and spoke with General Asim Munir, the country’s army leader. Off the coast of Karachi, Pakistan hosted an international maritime exercise in February in which Bangladesh’s navy participated.

For the first time in many years, direct trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan was restarted following Hasina’s departure. In addition to easing visa requirements and halting visas for Bangladeshis other than in cases of medical emergency, direct flights between the two nations are anticipated to resume shortly.
