In overnight assaults, Russian drones and missiles killed at least 14 civilians in Ukraine and injured dozens more, according to local officials on Monday. Nine people were killed in Kyiv, the country’s capital, when an apartment block partially collapsed. Russia’s defence ministry reported that 23 Ukrainian drones were shot down by its air defences between Monday and midnight.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, was secretly meeting King Charles III in the United Kingdom when the assaults occurred. According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia fired 11 ballistic missiles, five cruise missiles, and 352 drones and decoys overnight. According to a statement, 15 rockets and 339 drones were intercepted or disabled by air defences before reaching their targets.
In a separate statement, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on Monday that Ukraine’s accession to the alliance is final and that any Russian assault on the alliance would result in a “devastating” NATO reaction.
Ahead of the Alliance’s two-day conference in The Hague, he told reporters, “There is an irreversible path of Ukraine to NATO (…) that is still the truth today and will still be true on Thursday after this summit.”
Later in the day, two employees were killed after a Russian ballistic missile attack devastated a high school in the southern Odesa area of Ukraine, according to officials. Zelensky called the walkout “absolutely insane” and stated that no children were there because it was summer vacation.
