As winds increased and the fires spread to previously unaffected neighborhoods, firefighters were rushing to put out the large wildfires that were spreading over Los Angeles.
Fires that tore across the city, destroying communities and trying the resolve of thousands of firemen and millions of Californians, have now been proven to have killed at least 16 people.
The Palisades Fire grew on Saturday despite valiant efforts, including precise airborne crew sorties, and advanced north to the heavily populated San Fernando Valley and east into the priceless collections of the Getty Center art institution.

One house was destroyed in footage from the Mandeville Canyon region, and a wall of flame was licking up a hillside to threaten nearby homes.
Wind gusts that analysts warned would fuel the fires for days ahead were quickly replacing a brief pause in the wind.
