Israel attacked Lebanon in the early hours of Thursday and claimed to have intercepted Iranian missiles while the United States and Israel’s expanding conflict also caused new unrest in Iraq. A bastion of Hizbollah, the Tehran-backed group that has vowed to exact revenge for the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the early hours of the conflict on Saturday, was hit by an airstrike in the predawn hours of Saturday.
Although the US military had boasted of limiting the Islamic republic’s capabilities, Israel, which had previously advised civilians to evacuate, also announced it was working to intercept a fresh round of Iranian missiles.
Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards declared on Wednesday that they have closed the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint into the Gulf through which a fifth of the world’s crude oil flows. Iran has also launched missiles throughout the region and vowed to exact a high price for the strikes.The Iranian military command issued a statement warning that the region’s whole military and economic infrastructure could collapse as a result of the Americans’ mischief and lies.
According to energy market monitoring firm Kpler, oil ship transits over the strait have decreased by 90%. A significant early-morning explosion in Kuwait caused oil to seep into Gulf waters, according to Britain’s maritime service.
