As the conflict between the army and its rival paramilitary approaches the three-year mark, peace efforts in Sudan resumed in Cairo on Wednesday. Egypt, the UN, and the US urged on the warring sides to agree to a statewide humanitarian truce.Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told reporters that any attempt to weaken Sudan’s unity or split its territory would be met with “red lines” and that Egypt will not tolerate the collapse of Sudan or its institutions.

During a joint press conference with Ramtane Lamamra, the UN secretary-general’s special envoy for Sudan, Abdelatty declared that Egypt would not stand by and would not think twice about taking the required steps to support Sudan’s unity. Recognizing any militias or similar organizations is completely out of the question. On the fringes of the fifth meeting of the Consultative Mechanism to Enhance and Coordinate Peace Efforts, he declared, “Under no circumstances can we equate Sudanese state institutions, including the Sudanese army with any other militias.”

According to Lamamra, the fifth such meeting proved that diplomacy is still a practical means of achieving peace. Abdelatty stated that there is a regional consensus to obtain a quick humanitarian truce, involving specific withdrawals and the development of safe humanitarian corridors, despite the fact that numerous attempts at peace talks have failed to resolve the conflict.
