According to AFP journalists, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing into Gaza on Friday and spoke with Red Crescent members and truck drivers delivering humanitarian aid.

Jolie said she was “honored” to see humanitarian workers at the border, accompanied by an American delegation and welcomed by both current and former officials. The Oscar winner was informed by a Red Crescent volunteer that “there are thousands of aid trucks just waiting” at the border gate. The actor and former special envoy for the UN refugee agency reportedly visited to assess the injured people’s conditions, according to local media. Under the ceasefire in place in Gaza since October, the Rafah border crossing was supposed to reopen, but it has remained closed thus far.

Egypt and six other nations, including Saudi Arabia, “urged the international community to pressure Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately lift the constraints on the entry and distribution of essential supplies” to Gaza in a joint statement released on Friday. Cairo quickly denied that it had approved of Israel’s announcement in early December that the Rafah crossing would only be opened for individuals who wanted to leave Gaza.
