Ukraine’s allies plan to reinforce a US-led proposal to end the war with Russia during the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced. The meeting begins a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that the nation faces “one of the most difficult moments in our history,” amid mounting pressure to accept the peace initiative—details of which are reportedly favourable to Moscow.
Zelensky held phone discussions on Friday with Sir Keir and the leaders of France and Germany. Following the talks, the UK prime minister reaffirmed that Ukraine’s “friends and partners” remain committed to achieving a “lasting peace once and for all.”
Neither US President Donald Trump nor Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the summit. The widely leaked US peace plan reportedly includes proposals Kyiv had previously rejected, such as ceding control of some eastern territories.
Washington has been urging Ukraine to consider the plan, with senior Pentagon officials visiting Kyiv earlier this week to discuss the details. However, European leaders have expressed unease over what they see as terms leaning too heavily toward Moscow.
