A private aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed in an open field in western India on Wednesday, killing all five people on board, aviation officials said. There were no survivors.
The plane was travelling from Mumbai to Pawar’s hometown of Baramati when it crash-landed and caught fire about 254 kilometres from Mumbai. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Television visuals showed thick smoke rising from the wreckage.
Pawar, 66, was on his way to Baramati to campaign for a local election when the privately operated Learjet 45 went down. Two members of his staff and two crew members were also killed, according to an initial statement from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
A senior leader in Maharashtra politics, Pawar served as the state’s deputy chief minister and was a key figure in the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He held strong influence in the state’s sugar belt and was widely known for his ability to mobilise rural voters. Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences, describing Pawar as a dedicated public servant.
