Imagine not having to manage tickets or many apps when you leave your house in Abu Dhabi, board a passenger train operated by Etihad Rail, transfer to the Metro, and then take a taxi to a meeting in Dubai. As Etihad Rail collaborates with several businesses to develop a fully connected, multimodal transportation network, that future might materialize as early as next year.

With trains capable of transporting up to 400 passengers at up to 200 km/h, Etihad Rail’s passenger service is scheduled to begin in 2026 and connect 11 towns and regions across several emirates. It is anticipated that 36.5 million riders will use the service annually by 2030.

Via and United Trans have inked a deal with the UAE’s railway operator to incorporate rail services into the Citymapper travel planning software. The three organizations stated in a statement released on Wednesday that the collaboration will make public transportation “more accessible and attractive.”

Through a single, user-friendly app, passengers will be able to plan smooth, multimodal trips that integrate Etihad Rail services with those of the metro, bus, on-demand transit, and micromobility. Citymapper will enable users to compare options and shorten transfer times by offering real-time information, optimised routing, and fare visibility.
