In response to an ambush attack that claimed the lives of two American soldiers and an American civilian interpreter about a week ago, the Trump administration initiated military strikes in Syria on Friday with the goal of “eliminating” Daesh group members and weapons sites.
According to a US official, it was “a large-scale” attack that targeted 70 locations in central Syria that held Daesh weapons and infrastructure. More strikes should be anticipated, according to another US source who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss classified operations.
This is a proclamation of revenge, not the start of a war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on social media, “Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States of America will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people.
The Trump administration has stated that it is looking to concentrate closer to home in the Western Hemisphere, building up an armada in the Caribbean Sea to target alleged drug-smuggling boats and promising to continue seizing sanctioned oil tankers as part of a pressure campaign on Venezuela’s leader. This coincides with the new military operation in Syria.
