The State Department said Thursday that the United States will impose sanctions on Sudan after finding that the country’s government used chemical weapons in 2024 during the army’s battle with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

A power struggle between the army and the RSF sparked the war in Sudan in April 2023, resulting in waves of ethnic bloodshed, the biggest humanitarian disaster in history, and starvation in numerous places. There have been over 13 million displaced people and tens of thousands of fatalities.
