On the eve of a diplomatic meeting in France, authorities said that Russia had attacked Ukraine early on Monday, killing two people in the Kyiv area. Just after midnight, a nationwide alarm was sounded, and the Ukrainian military reported that air defenses were active in multiple locations.
One person was killed and three others were injured when a private medical facility in the capital caught fire due to Russian strikes, according to the State Emergency Service of Kyiv. Images of rescuers pulling individuals from a demolished building on stretchers were made public. According to Kyiv regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk, one man in his 70s was slain in another predawn attack on the nearby city of Fastiv.
As temperatures fell to -8C, the official stated that the strikes caused power outages in the area and that backup systems were engaged to preserve water and heating supplies. The strikes occurred on the eve of a European leaders’ meeting in Paris, where they are hoping to make progress on a peace proposal that Kyiv claims is “90 percent” ready.
Security advisers from fifteen nations, including Germany, France, and Britain, as well as representatives from NATO and the European Union, convened in Kyiv over the weekend to lay the foundation.
A Ukrainian official told AFP that US special envoy Steve Witkoff participated electronically in the negotiations, but they were overshadowed by the US’s massive military assault on Venezuela earlier in the day.
