The Thumbay International Research Grant 2025 has been given to Dr. Ibrahim El Serafi, Associate Professor and Head of the Basic Medical Sciences Department at the College of Medicine, Ajman University, to support his study, “The role of Vorinostat and CID1067700 in skin regeneration and wound healing.”
The study will investigate the effects of these two chemical compounds on stem cells to ascertain if they can promote differentiation into keratinocytes—the cells that make the skin. The researcher hopes to aid in the creation of novel and efficient treatment approaches for chronic wounds through this study.
The project’s goals include determining the most effective treatment using a skin wound model in Sprague Dawley rats, analysing the toxicity and side effects of the treatment on the animal model, testing the impact of Vorinostat and CID1067700 on the in vitro differentiation of stem cells into keratinocyte-like cells, and investigating any potential genotoxic effects during the differentiation process.
Chronic wounds, especially those brought on by burns, diabetes, or venous insufficiency, present significant global health issues and frequently result in life-threatening consequences, such as infections, amputations, and diminished quality of life.
