On Monday, a Colombian military plane crashed after takeoff, killing 66 people. Rescuers transported survivors to nearby hospitals and looked for four still missing, according to a top official.Hugo Alejandro Lopez, the chief of the nation’s armed forces, stated that the Lockheed Martin-built Hercules C-130 cargo plane was carrying 128 passengers, including 11 Air Force members, 115 army men, and two national police officers.

The death toll was roughly double the previous amount provided by police, who continued their search and recovery activities at the scene of the fatal incident. According to Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez, the accident occurred during the plane’s takeoff from Puerto Leguizamo, near the Peruvian border. According to firefighter Eduardo San Juan Callejas, the jet had an impact near the end of the runway while taking off, and a wing clipped a tree as it fell.

The crash led the jet to catch fire and detonate some explosive devices on board, he explained. Residents of the rural location were the first to pull out survivors, with recordings showing men driving down a dirt road on motorcycles carrying wounded soldiers. Authorities reported that the collision site was difficult to reach, hindering rescue efforts. Military vehicles eventually arrived.
