The acts of a performer who raised a Palestinian flag onstage after a show were denounced as “wholly inappropriate” by London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday. Online video captures a quick altercation at the stage’s edge during which a man in a shirt and tie tries in vain to stop the artist.
The event that occurred during the curtain call on Saturday in the British capital occurred on the last night of an 11-night run of Giuseppe Verdi’s four-act opera Il Trovatore. Someone who claimed to have been in the crowd wrote on X, “Amazing scenes at the Royal Opera House tonight.
The “display of the flag was an unauthorised action by the artist,” according to a representative for the Royal Ballet and Opera in Covent Garden, London.
Following words of solidarity for those in Gaza from a number of performers at this year’s Glastonbury festival, including Kneecap, Bob Vylan, Wolf Alice, and Amyl and The Sniffers, the event occurred. The leader of the duo Bob Vylan led a chant against the Israeli army at the event, and police are currently looking into the incident.
About an earlier performance, Liam O’Hanna of Kneecap, better known by his stage name Mo Chara, has also been charged with a “terror” offense for allegedly supporting the banned organizations Hezbollah and Hamas.
