The art and environmental campaigning converge in the work of M’hammed Kilito. Kilito, a documentary photographer living in Rabat, Morocco, has been documenting the impact of climate change on the delicate oasis of the Middle East and North Africa for the past six years.

The International Photography Festival (Xposure) 2025 will include his work, a visual ethnography of disappearing landscapes and the communities that rely on them, allowing attendees to admire the stunning ecosystems that may be found in the middle of the desert. Kilito gave the audience a preview of his most recent project, Kafila, which is the Arabic word for “caravan,” during his Tuesday discussion at Xposure.

His trip through Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Tunisia is called Kafila; Mauritania will be the next stop on the itinerary. Kilito’s photography documents the ecological destruction of these historic habitats as well as the tenacity of the inhabitants.

Mohammed, a lone guy from the village of Aït Mansour, is featured in one of his most beautiful pictures from his Before It’s Gone series. There were to be 100 families in this community, but almost all of them have had to leave due to water constraints. There are just four families left, including Mohammed’s. In a sense, he is a climate refugee within his nation.
