Nationalist historian Karol Nawrocki won Poland’s presidential election, official results indicated Monday, dealing a severe blow to the pro-EU administration as well as abortion and LGBTQ rights advocates.
In the politically polarised NATO and EU nation, the 42-year-old supporter of US President Donald Trump received 50.9% of the vote in the runoff on Sunday. His 53-year-old opponent, Rafal Trzaskowski, Warsaw’s pro-EU mayor and supporter of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s moderate administration, received 49.1 percent. Nawrocki stated that he wants Poland to be “a state that matters in international, European, and transatlantic relations”.

He told AFP that the election outcome was a “yellow card” for the administration and may lead to “early parliamentary elections, possibly not this year.
