When Nisar Ahmad Wani managed to carry out the world’s first camel cloning in 2009, it was hailed as a great achievement. Today, Wani is the scientific director of the Center for Reproductive Biotechnology in Dubai, and the practice is so popular that cloning has become his job.
Wani and his team research and develop new cloning techniques and maintain cell banks, making it possible to make copies of animals, including buffaloes and sheep. But the focus of the center is the cloning of camels.
Each year, dozens of cloned dromedary calves are produced. Among the most popular are camel “beauty queens” copies, with just the right combination of drooping lips and long necks.
