Donald Trump, the president of the United States, is adamant that he will not tolerate any resistance. Therefore, it was not surprise that he demanded that prestigious American institutions give up liberal values and free expression.
In a letter to Harvard University, the Department of Education demanded that the university remove students who held leftist views, label those who protested Israel’s war atrocities against civilians in Gaza as engaging in anti-Semitism, filter international applicants based on their political beliefs, and stop using diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) criteria for admissions and staff appointments in favor of merit-based hiring. The letter also threatened to block the $2.3 billion government funding if Harvard University did not comply with the Department of Education’s requirements.
No government, regardless of which party is in power, should dictate what private universities can teach, who they can admit and hire, and what areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,” responded Alan Garber of Harvard University.
Harvard University embodies the ideal liberal institution in a democracy, and the US was formerly one of such democracies. However, Harvard is really not a liberal university. It’s pretty conservative. However, it does not exclude liberal academics and students. The university does not enforce censorship but does not support particular viewpoints. It is absurd to claim that Harvard harbors communists and lefties.
