For a horrific act that caused widespread hospital strikes and nationwide protests last year, the rapist and killer of an Indian doctor was given a life sentence on Monday.
In a case that brought attention to the persistent problem of violence against women in the most populous nation in the world, the 31-year-old medic’s family broke down in tears, expressing their dismay at the punishment and their wish that her killer would be hanged.
Judge Anirban Das, however, ruled that Sanjoy Roy should be imprisoned for the remainder of his life since the case was not “the rarest of the rare cases,” and so did not warrant the death penalty. The bloodied body of the trainee physician was found in a government hospital in Kolkata, an eastern city, in August 2024 sparked outrage.
Thousands of people in Kolkata and other parts of India joined the doctors’ protests in sympathy after the murder prompted doctors at government hospitals to seek more protection. The only person in the case, Roy, 33, was arrested a day after the victim’s body was found. Roy had been a hospital civic volunteer.
In response to the killing’s severity, India’s Supreme Court last year established a national task committee to investigate ways to improve security for healthcare professionals, stating that it had shocked the conscience of the nation.” Sitting near Roy in court on Monday, the victim’s parents expressed their desire for Roy to be put to death.
