During her final solo foreign tour as first lady, U.S. First Lady Jill Biden praised efforts to combat cancer and called for greater attention to women’s health issues while touring the capital of the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.

After traveling to Italy and touring her Sicilian ancestral home of Gesso, Biden, 73, landed in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday evening. In the afternoon of Thursday, she started her tour of the metropolis, first seeing Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Al Ketbi at the enormous enclosure for Qasr Al Bahra.

After that, Biden visited the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, where she and her daughter Ashley met hospital specialists to hear about the clinic’s cancer treatment initiatives. She talked about how President Joe Biden and his late first wife lost their son, Beau Biden, to brain cancer, and how devastated they were.

For us, it was the same. She recalled, “We were like everyone else. “We entered. We heard: “Cancer of the brain.” We didn’t hear anything else.

Biden next went to Qasr Al Hosn, a medieval fort located in the middle of the glittering skyscrapers of Abu Dhabi. She signed a guestbook and stopped to gaze at the kerosene lanterns that lined one wall.
