A special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Monday acquitted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case related to alleged offensive remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was then the BJP president. Congress MP Karamvir Singh Boudh praised the verdict of the court and thanked the judiciary quoting the Constitution of India. “We are all going out to start a ‘store of love’ and develop fraternity.

Complainant Vijay Mishra said he would appeal the verdict in an appellate court after getting a certified copy of the order and consulting his lawyers. The court acquitted Gandhi in the case brought under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Rahul Gandhi was present in the court at the moment of the pronouncement of verdict. The court has found that Rahul Gandhi’s words were not defamatory.

Mishra, a local BJP leader and former chairman of Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank, filed the defamation lawsuit from Sultanpur. It is believed that Rahul Gandhi made the comment at a campaign event in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.

Mishra asserted that Gandhi had made disparaging comments about Shah and had quoted him as saying that the BJP claimed to be committed to honest and clean politics but was led by a “party president who is an accused in a murder case”.
