Ahead of Cyclone Arnab, which is predicted to make landfall on Wednesday, two states along India’s eastern coast were getting ready to evacuate thousands of people since one of them stated it would close schools in some areas for two days.

According to India’s weather office, Arnab, which developed over the Bay of Bengal before becoming a cyclonic storm, is expected to make landfall in Andhra Pradesh by Wednesday morning, with gusts up to 140 kph (87 mph). The cyclone is also expected to strengthen.

The northern and central coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, as well as the southern parts of bordering Odisha, are predicted to see heavy to extremely heavy rainfall due to the weather system. Andhra Pradesh has directed the prompt restoration of power after disruptions and called on vessels at sea to return onshore.

The state administration has classified 570,000 people as vulnerable, and a top Andhra Pradesh disaster management official told Reuters on Monday that evacuations will begin Monday evening. In addition to announcing that schools and colleges in five districts would be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, the government of Odisha stated that it was getting ready to relocate people of low-lying areas to cyclone shelters. The Bay of Bengal is one of the world’s main tropical cyclone hotspots.
