MaXhosa Africa, a South African brand, lighted up the first day of Paris Women’s Fashion Week on Monday with a first collection of vibrant knitwear designed to highlight African craftsmanship and solidarity. Laduma Ngxokolo, the founder of MaXhosa, put out 54 designs for his debut appearance on the Paris Fashion Week calendar, including one that emphasised his continent’s recent rescaling on the UN official map.
“I am honoured to be represented. “I’ve been fighting for a seat at the table for 16 years,” Ngxokolo, 39, said of his invitation to the world’s most famous fashion calendar. The goal behind his Spring-Summer 2027 collection was to celebrate African togetherness, with one wool dress including knitted tassels embroidered with the continent’s country names.
Another black-and-grey suit featured a large outline of Africa on the front, with other parts of the world on the back and sleeves, alluding to a recent resizing of the United Nations’ official map to better reflect the continent’s true size.
