Echoing the demands of student protestors, opposition parties staged a protest at parliament on Wednesday, calling for the resignation of India’s education minister. They then entered the chambers and forced the suspension of proceedings. Rahul Gandhi, the head of the opposition, was freed from detention outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home during the demonstrations. Outside of the capital, youth and opposition groups are holding rallies in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Goa, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, Jammu, and Ahmedabad.
This week, the protests, which began last month in response to the disclosure of medical school entrance exam papers that impacted about two million students, grew into the largest youth challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since his election in 2014. Rahul Gandhi led a group of opposition lawmakers who gathered outside the Parliament building in New Delhi on Wednesday. Many of them were wearing black and holding signs urging Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign.The signs said, “Save lives, Stop NEET,” referring to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, which is the name of the medical school exam. “Our children’s future is not for sale.” Additionally, they yelled anti-Modi and anti-Pradhan slogans. Once inside Parliament, opposition legislators forced a short stop of proceedings by demanding a discussion on the exam paper leak and reported police violence against student demonstrators. Both Modi and Pradhan have stated that they are open to discussing the matter and more extensive reforms in education.
