Heads of state and government, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, as well as AI industry leaders, like Sam Altman of OpenAI and Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, are attending the week-long AI Summit being held in India. The previous AI summits, which took place in South Korea, Britain, and France, were far smaller and less impressive than the one in New Delhi.

In his opening remarks, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi restated the summit’s motto, “welfare of all, happiness of all.” He claimed that the fact that India hosted the summit demonstrated the effectiveness of its standing as a center for research and technology.

The goal is clear: AI should be used for shaping humanity, inclusive growth, and sustainable future,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s railway minister. Indian corporate and political elites are optimistic about AI’s potential advantages and do not share the concerns of other leaders and citizens that AI may disrupt society and eliminate jobs.

According to Modi, AI would help make India a top destination for investment and technology, accelerating economic growth. He intends to capitalize on India’s large AI market, given its population, which surpassed China’s more than two years ago.
