Iran would not tolerate “rioters, despite the fact that the public has the right to demonstrate, the country’s judiciary chief declared on Monday, following more than a week of sometimes fatal rallies. The words came after US President Donald Trump warned Iran that it will “get hit very hard by the United States” if the authorities killed more demonstrators.

The protests began on December 28 with a walkout by merchants in Tehran over high prices and economic stagnation, but they have now moved to other cities and grown to include political demands. He went on to say that Iran “listens to protesters and their criticism, and distinguishes between them and rioters.”

According to an AFP tally based on government declarations and media sources, demonstrations have occurred in 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces, affecting at least 45 different cities to varied degrees, the majority of which are small or medium-sized and focused in the western region.

According to government reports, at least 12 people have been murdered in local skirmishes since December 30, including members of the security forces. According to human rights organizations, at least 16 people have been killed over a week of turmoil in Iran.
