UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveys condolences to Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah’s devastation, which killed at least 46 people, left 23 missing, and displaced nearly 44,000 amid floods and landslides. The UAE expressed sincere sympathy to victims’ families, the Sri Lankan government, and its people over the cyclone’s toll of dozens dead, thousands displaced, and widespread damage.
Cyclone Ditwah barreled northward across Sri Lanka on Friday, unleashing over 300mm of rain that sparked landslides, flooded southern and eastern regions including Colombo, and prompted warnings of further deluges.
The Irrigation Department stated that it anticipated the floods, which have already impacted numerous regions in southern and eastern Sri Lanka, including many portions of the country’s capital, Colombo, to spread even farther. Schools and train services remained disrupted, and the Colombo Stock Exchange suspended operations early.
According to the air force, 13 individuals who were stranded on a bridge in Polonnaruwa, 220 kilometers northeast of Colombo, were airlifted as part of coordinated evacuations by the military and police. According to air force footage made public, a guy who was stranded atop a coconut tree and many families trapped on rooftops were also flown to safety.
