Key components of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, according to dozens of UN experts, are in violation of international law and could worsen Palestinian suffering, they said Friday.
According to a declaration by 35 independent experts from the UN, “imposing an immediate peace at any cost, regardless of or blatantly against law and justice, is a recipe for further injustice, future violence, and instability.
They expressed grave concerns about over a dozen points in the 20-point proposal, which was supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and presented by the US president last week. The experts stated that they “welcome part of the peace plan”; they are required by the UN Human Rights Council but do not speak for the UN.
They celebrated calls for an immediate release of those who had been wrongfully arrested, a lasting peace, and a flood of supplies. They also praised the demand that Israeli forces leave Gaza and refrain from annexing the region or forcing its residents to leave. Other aspects of the plan, they cautioned, were “deeply inconsistent with fundamental rules of international law.”
Any peace plan must guarantee self-determination and responsibility and “not create further conditions of oppression,” according to the experts, who included Francesca Albanese, the special rapporteur on rights in the Palestinian area.
