As new attacks rocked the Middle East from Tehran to Baghdad, Israel announced on Tuesday that it had murdered Iran’s influential national security leader, Ali Larijani. This would be a devastating blow to the Islamic regime. Larijani was “eliminated last night,” according to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, however Iran has not verified this. Israel’s military announced earlier on Tuesday that Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Basij paramilitary group, had been killed in a strike on Tehran on Monday.

Their killings are reported less than three weeks after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989, was murdered by US-Israeli strikes on February 28, sparking a regional conflict. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, took his place; there is a lot of conjecture over his location and health. According to US President Donald Trump, “we don’t know… if he’s dead or not” on Monday.

The conflict has resulted in hundreds of deaths and millions of displaced people, particularly in Iran and Lebanon.Due to Iran’s strikes on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for the passage of crude and liquefied natural gas, the crisis has also caused oil prices to surge.Early on Tuesday, oil prices increased by more than five percent as a result of numerous nations rejecting Trump’s demand that they assist in safeguarding shipping.
